Jesus tells us in today's text that what defiles us is what comes out of our mouths. Hard to read that and not think of the vitriol and hate that was spewed in Charlottesville last week by white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and the like. Directly after that, we see Jesus seem to ignore a Canaanite woman begging Jesus for help, seeming to say to her, "My life matters, even though I'm not from the house of Israel!" What voices are calling out to us? How can these stories help us to face the prejudice we have in our own hearts? How can this text help us to confront racism in this country - and maybe even in our own hearts?
